Wondering why your middle school child was assigned making a chain of paper loops? Measuring and reading rulers is a skill needed in middle school, reading measurements through at least eighths.
I asked students to measure and make a pattern strip that measured 6 7/8 inches long by 3/4inches wide, and then create enough of these strips to reach from floor to ceiling (about 90 strips). We assembled all of these chains into a circumference tree that will be the framework for many geometry activities featuring circumference, area, perimeter, surface area, volume, and rotational symmetry.
